Private and social entrepreneurship is where James Van Leeuwen most enjoys working as an ‘Innovation Architect’. James established consulting firm Ventus Development Services in 2002, specializing in strategic communications and designing, developing and delivering initiatives to leverage information and communication technology (ICT) for community, enterprise and economic development. Before this, James co-founded the social enterprise Sustainable Alberta (www.sustainable.ab.ca) to host an ambitious project called the Canadian Commuter Challenge (www.commuterchallenge.ca), which involved partnering with almost a dozen other social enterprises across the country – a painful but priceless learning experience. The principal focus of James’ consulting work has been helping rural and remote communities to realize the transformative economic benefits of ICT and renewable energy technologies.
