Abbas Ali Beg

Abbas is a Manager in the Clean Fuels Development group at ATCO’s in Corporate Development. He has a B.Sc. and a M.Eng in Mechanical Engineering and is a Certified Energy Manager (CEM). He has worked with ATCO in the utility division since 2011 as an EIT and Senior Engineer in a number of different groups, he was also involved with commercializing low carbon technology in Alberta.

In his current role he works on clean fuel development opportunities. Abbas is passionate about energy and energy related technological solutions that are fiscally and environmentally responsible and believes that industry will lead in the creation of a low carbon energy future. He joined the fellowship in 2020 and has contributed in initiatives such as Youth Innovation Session, Youth Seed Fund, and EFL workshops.

Cailee Ellis

Cailee’s experience includes roles as Head of Sustainability and Environment where she oversaw development and execution of a Western Canadian Sustainability Strategy, leading major initiatives related to climate and energy, circular economy, nature (water & biodiversity), community investment, human rights and indigenous engagement. In her portfolio Cailee also oversaw environmental management and public affairs. Cailee spent over 15 years in the energy sector, gaining experience in clean tech investment, government and leading environment and regulatory affairs portfolios with upstream and midstream oil and gas companies. Passionate about creating better outcomes for society, Cailee served as a Fellow with the Energy Futures Lab from 2020-2023, and sits as Board Chair with the Fig Tree Foundation and Vice-Chair with the Calgary Regional Airshed Zone.

Cailee holds an MBA in Executive Management, M.Sc. in Environmental Practice and a Water Resources Engineering Technology Diploma, and has completed executive education programs in climate and energy policy and regulatory leadership. Outside of her professional career, Cailee is the best version of herself when in nature, scrambling the Rockies, cross country skiing, cycling, and traveling.

Candice Paton M.Sc., P.Eng.

Candice is the Executive Director for Regulatory Affairs & External Relations at Enhance Energy, an Alberta-based carbon management company currently sequestering 1.5 million tonnes of CO2 each year in Alberta’s geology permanently. She brings over 15 years of experience in technology development and innovation in energy systems. She has been a Fellow of the Energy Futures Lab from 2017 – 2022 and is excited to stay engaged with the Lab and the Fellows to accelerate an inclusive and equitable transition to a prosperous net-zero future. Candice is passionate about energy technologies, environmental performance and impact in communities.

She holds a B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering and a M.Sc. in Chemical Engineering and is registered as a Professional Engineer with APEGA. She has been recognized as a leading female innovator as part of the Alberta Chapter of SHEInnovates and as an energy industry influencer in the Young Women in Energy 2020 awards.

Candice is a thought leader in her community, volunteers with a number of STEM educational organizations, and founded the Alberta Carbon Hub – a collaborative group of companies working together to highlight how CCUS plays a role in our net zero future. Her family feels at home in Edmonton and Calgary and spends as much of their free time as possible exploring mountains by foot, by ski or by snowboard.
